For a plant wonk like me , there is only one word that comes to nous to line the character topiary at Disney World .

This West Coast Canadian girl was suitably impressed by the impulsive flora that serve as decoration at Epcot . The color and form of Disney topiary are so realistic that you would think they were phantasy . But , it ’s not an thaumaturgy . The horticulturists at Disney work on hard to make these naturalistic characters come alive with live plants and a great deal of artistry . I was at theEpcot International Flower and Garden Festivalfor the opening weekend to speak about some of the projects in my Quran , Garden Made . One day between talk , I finish to watch a film on how the topiary are made at Disney .
For each character reference , a steel frame is custom made to the specifications of the creative person . The frame is then stuffed with sphagnum moss ( which is ordinarily used for coronal and hang baskets ) . The moss is soaked and then the industrial plant are add . For most of the characters , the majority of the topiary was covered in creeping fig ( Ficus pumila).These vines are easy to bind to the structure with florist pins and they stay unfeigned to size . you’re able to see that Rabbit is a mixture of both green and variegated creeping fig .
Disney uses a miscellanea of other ornamental plants to adorn and shape the characters , from skunk to epiphyte .

As I was there on the opening weekend of the festival , I saw the topiary at their big reveal . I ’m certain that a lot of pruning , watering , and patching will be needed over the course of the festival .
I wonder how they water Peter Pan all the way up there !
At night , lights transformed the topiaries into colored sculptures .
I did see some miniature topiary starter outfit that were usable to take home . They had a variety of 12″ wire - framed characters overeat with moss and embark on with one plug . I wanted to bring one home but it would n’t have been allowed over the mete . I will certainly be testing some topiary this year and will partake the results as they fill in .
