With place nutrient fermentation find fault up steam , there are many choice on the grocery for what to ferment in and with . It ’s great that this front has grown in popularity . But with so many options out there , it can become overwhelming to know what ’s needed ( and not require ) to get started .
That ’s why I ’ve come up up with a tyro ’s supply list for home fruit and veggie agitation .
Food-Safe Jar
A standard quart size veritable sassing canning jar is all you really need to get fermenting . It ’s a great and cheap vas to begin with . And if you really get into fermenting , you may always graduate to a fermentation earthenware jar . Keith Homan / Shutterstock
They do make fermentation smut in various sizes , include modest I . But be certain that you buy your lampblack from a trusted source so that you live the glaze is safe . My favorite reservoir for crocks isStone Creek Trading .

Jar Weight
Many formula call for a weight to keep the produce under the seawater when work . Keeping the food submerged is central to a successful ferment and helps avoid mold .
I in person use a pocket-sized field glass jar palpebra from a WECK shock when work in jars . But there are many jar weight options on the food market such asthese onesandthese .
Self-Burping Lid/Airlock
you’re able to certainly ferment without an airlock . But it does make it well-to-do if you add one to your jar ferment.meeboonstudio/Shutterstock
Many formula require you to “ burp ” the jar daily . Burping a zymolysis is essentially just unscrewing the canning jar ring , remove the lid and allowing the built - up gas to release . With an airlock , this step is removed .
An airlock allows the agitation to belch out while keeping rubble and microbe out . Here are two of my favorite airlock choice for shock : Silicone Air LockandStandard Air Lock .

Fresh Organic Produce
Sure , you could make zymolysis with sure-enough produce as well , but you ’ll get the grown rush out of it if you use freshly harvested fruits and vegetables . Pixel - Shot / Shutterstock
Did you cognize that by ferment your green groceries , you are actually making it more alimentary ? Fermented veg are easy for the body to digest and the vitamin and nutrients are more readily available for your body to absorb .
Plus , they are full of the good - belly bacterium that we ’ve all heard so much about : probiotic .

I hope this supply list helps you get get down fermenting at home base . It can seem intimidating at first , but once you give it a effort you ’ll see how comfortable and delicious it really is .
Side note : Many people prefer to weigh out salt to reach an accurate saltwater saltiness . I do not see this being a necessary with fruit and vegetable ferment , unless you sell your zymosis and want the same outcome with each product . If you do prefer to weigh your recipe , here is the food for thought scale I recommend .
