I have always wished that greater number of people would be interested in canning , gardening , and food craft . That is why I come out blogging . Thanks to 2020 ’s Covid crisis my wishes have come true and , as they say , “ Be measured what you wish for ” .
1000000 of multitude were sent home from body of work with plenty of free clock time to learn young home skills . cast off in food shortage fears , and suddenly backyard gardens have start up everywhere . Bread baking is America ’s new favourite preceding metre , and everybody and their buddy is learning how to can .
I really am thrilled with the current enthusiasm about self sufficiency and food preservation . late though , I ’ve been wish well some of the new members of the canning community would get back to body of work or watch over Netflix . Because this canning revival is causing a shortage in canning lids and , like the residue of the canners out there , I am struggling to stay buy in up on canning supply .
From what I can tell the canning supply famine is being felt everywhere . For the last few week everyone I talk to about canning reference the conflict to detain supplied . The theme has been mentioned quite oft this Summer in many social media homesteading radical . I latterly meet my preschooler ’s new teacher and was excited to learn that she is also a nurseryman and canner . A large portion of our conversation at “ meet the teacher ” was about her hunt for palpebra and jars . There is peck of speculation about the famine being due to manufacturing facility shut down due to Covid concerns . I ’m imagine the bigger matter is just uttermost requirement .
The cost of lids and jars online have shot to ridiculous prices . Amazon currently has Ball and Kerr canning lids name for over$1.00 a piece . Can we say toll gauging ? In early June I was golden to order a pillowcase of Orchard Road Lids ( no longer usable ) . Even after ordering a full casing , I still ended up bear $ .52 a firearm for the flat tire . That case has dwindled down to less than 7 boxes , but when I look at those 7 tiny boxes I finger rich . Like me , you might have better lot finding lids online than in your local supermarkets . But buyer beware ; some of the lids listed as “ canning lid ” are actually only intended for ironic reposition and will not seal your jars .
If the lid dearth continue , I just might have to get out down and check how to properly useTattler palpebra . I have a few that I regrettably did not have great achiever with . plausibly user mistake . I have never found the motivation to revisit them and actually learn what I did wrong . That may switch soon .
There is also the opening of breaking one of the cardinal canning safety rules and reusing old eyelid ? I recall I would only break that rule under extreme circumstances though . I recognise that some of you reading this might be rebel canners that regularly reuse your palpebra . I can not be so adventuresome because I have never been capable to remove the lids when opening jar without bend the edge of them . I imagine I will just have to desire that demand for hat slows down as everyone gets back to work .
There is plenty of talking these 24-hour interval about things pose back to normal or “ the unexampled normal . ” It would be really great if interest group in self - suffiiency and food preservation continues on and becomes part of the “ new normal ” for all of the new 2020 backyard gardeners and suburbanite homesteaders . I ’m sure supply will finally arrest up with the new found requirement . In the meantime , if you are debate partaking in pandemic hoarding , hoard some even oral cavity lids and ship them to me please .
