Scent in the Garden. April.
One of the most fragrant plants in the garden is in salad days now . It has tiny yellow-bellied tufts of flower . They pack a punch which is quite disproportionate to their lilliputian size .
Azara microphylla
Azara microphyllais an evergreen with small , glistening leaves , so even out of heyday it is a nice looking for tree . It comes from Chile and needs a sheltered spot . The scent wafts round the garden on the slight breeze and anyone walking round the garden is stopped in their tracks . It is thoroughgoing vanilla . book will distinguish you that this is a winter -flowering shrub or tree diagram but with me it never blooms before April . If you love scent in the garden this should be gamey on your list , it is rattling .

Azara microphylla
Skimmias have been looking good since the Winter . Skimmia japonica ‘ Rubella‘had nice ruby flower buds in February but now they have opened up in to odorous smelling , starry flowers . As you’re able to see bees have it off the sweet fragrance too .
Skimmia x confusa‘Kew Green
Another evergreen plant shrub with lustrous leaves isOsmanthus burkwoodi . It has starry white peak which are extremely scented ; they smell of vanilla extract .

I have it away the empurpled dangly flowers of the scramblingAkebia pentapyhylla . They smell out of chocolate The scent is peculiarly intense at night . ThisAkebiais a cross betweenAkebia quinataandAkebia Poncirus trifoliata . I boughtthis motley because it is supposed to be the one most likely to bear fruit . I have since learn that you need two dissimilar varieties so as to get the amazing edible yield .

Some of my small daffodils are fragrant . The dear little jonquilNarcissus‘Bell Song ’ has salmon cups and smells endearing . I love the fragrant , lemon yellow colourise ‘ Pipit ’ too .
Narcissus ‘ Sweetness ’

I have a crowfoot yellow , perennialErysimumwhich has the lovely wallflower scent . It is called , fittingly enoughErysimum‘Walburton ’s Fragrant Sunshine ’ .

I will end with some fragrant foliation which would be endearing even without the aniseed olfactory property . It isAgastache rugosa‘Golden Jubilee ’ .

So there we have my favourite sweet-scented flowers for April . I am join in with Louise ’s ‘ fragrance in the Garden ’ meme atWellywomanblog . So if you go over there you may see other olfactory delight . What a pity we ca n’t have ‘ boodle and sniff ’ for this meme .

We share a lovemaking of fragrance in the garden , though in my case I have a very windy expose garden therefore except on special days the.scent dissipates , I have to cut some ! I am delghted to find that Azara is scented , I planted a variagated one last year & shall plan some study in the locality soon when it flowers . Will be look out for N. ‘ Sweetness ’ . A Daffodill I have is N. Odorus which is to be highly recommended . A gorgeous scent unlike to other Narcissus as well as a very pleasing rakish coming into court & seniority . Do get it if you do n’t have it !
Your picture of Skimmia tempt me to try turn one even if it entail make to deepen the soil as were are alkaline . at least it would work for a few geezerhood .
Your garden must smell divine ! I ’ve heard of the marvelous scent of Azara microphylla and have a couple variegate ace in my garden which have n’t blossom yet or maybe I leave out it . Ca n’t wait to see that lovely fragrance . For a second Akebia in your garden , may I evoke Akebia quinata ‘ Shirobana ’ whose white flowers have a strong scent reminiscent of fragrant parentage ( Matthiola incana ) which wafts nicely . Thanks for the tour of olfactory delights in your garden !

bid we could smell it from here , over the net . I have a few odorous Erysimum cheiri too , I love them .
Oh wow … .Akebia pentapyhylla smells of chocolate ? You ’d have to value me away from it , how unusual it is too , I do like it ’s colour . I have been reek everything thanks to you , and have discovered that many of my tulips are scented too….another flower I have never smelled before.xxx
Your post made me covetous – I do n’t have enough scent in my garden , at least not of the kind you may detect just walking through it . I was surprised to obtain that the Azara could develop here as I do n’t call up ever seeing it in the local nurseries ; however , as it needs regular body of water , it ’s presently off limit point but I could add an Osmanthus !

Osmanthus burkwoodii
Are n’t all the wonderful scents of spring intoxicating ? ! I ’m beaming that I do n’t have leap allergy too tough . I would n’t want to miss out on all the amazing smells . love !
At the mo it is Euphorbia melliferra which is scenting the garden with its perfume of honey . I have Narcissus Pipit and that smells so beautiful and an Akebia but I still have to be convinced that it smells of chocolate !
I ’ve come in across reference of azara but have never come across it in the flesh . It sounds rather enamour though . As Angie says if only such posts as this could be scrape and sniff … .. mmmmm …

Akebia x pentaphylla
Oh my Chloris , your garden smack scrumptious and as for your GBBD post , what a wonderful array of heyday in this perfect give . I would love to see some “ long stab ” ( is that the right term ? ) of your garden as I ’m sure with your riches of plant knowledge that you have some stunning works combinations . I noted your scuttlebutt on Rusty Duck ’s blog about Acer coming reliable from seeded player and I ’m keeping my finger crossed for my Winkworth seed . The young foliage is looking as it should do and it discolor a prominent scarlet last autumn so I am promising . I would have bought a key specimen but even at Wisley , just five minutes push from me , all they had for sale were weirdly - name specimens that appeared to be transplant . Anyway who does n’t love a ‘ destitute ’ plant . give thanks you for your brilliant posts Chloris , I have learnt so much from you and other blogger .
