Unique new and heirloom selections of daffodils, tulips, and out-of-the-ordinary bulbs can add intrigue and whimsy to your Northwest garden
The changing sunshine and temperatures in September in thePacific Northwestare a sign for some that it ’s clock time to begin roll up the garden . But it is also a sign for many gardeners to think about spring and next class ’s garden . It ’s the time of year whenfall bulbsare shipping and ready to be sunk into the soil . There are many on-line beginning for bulb , often shipping direct from the Netherlands . Getting an order in early is very important if you are looking for strange colors , uncommon bulbs , or species bulbs . However , it is not out of the head to stumble upon fantastically unique bulbs at a localgarden essence .
I love the season forbulb plantingand preparation , and I love searching out the best , New , or Old heirloom forms of electric light to let in in my own garden and those that I work in . Here are a few standouts that have garnered a spot in my planting schemes recently .
Deer-resistant daffodils in different colors and forms make spring plantings more interesting
daffodil ( Narcissusspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–9 ) are very popular spring foul-up here in the Northwest due to their cheery disposition and cervid resistance . Happy in full sun to partial shade , the varieties are endless , with new 1 coming out each year . A recently evolve new favorite of mine is ‘ White Petticoat ’ ( Narcissus bulbocodium’White Petticoat ’ , Zones 4–9 ) . This selection belong to a group of daffodil commonly called ring petticoat daffodil ( because the corona , or loving cup , resemble the old - fashioned basketball hoop petticoats used to hold dress into shape ) . ‘ White Petticoat ’ has lovely snowy blooms and develop to about 8 in in height ; it forms a decent - sized clump in just a few year . Grasslike leaf appears first , followed by the flowers . ‘ Julia Jane ’ ( Narcissus romieuxii‘Julia Jane ’ , Zones 5–9 ) is another hoop petticoat variety with lovely pale - yellowed blooms .
New to me , but by no agency a newfangled motley , ‘ Polar Ice ’ ( Narcissus‘Polar Ice ’ , Zones 3–8 ) is a rare laurels - winning daffodil with snowstorm - blanched petals and a tiny , ruffled lemon - yellowed cup that maturate to whiten with a light-green eye . This scented G. Lubbe heirloom , which predates 1936 , is known to be a good naturalizer and is cervid and gnawer resistant . It tops out on bow that produce 16 to 18 column inch improbable .
Tulips with a twist enliven spring beds and containers
Tulips ( Tulipaspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–8 ) , with their refined petals and beautiful colors , are always a welcome sight in spring in the Northwest . I usually put mine into pots and leave them outside by the nursery . I have it off bask them up closely and personal after I have bring them to a display of otherspring bloomersby the main launching door to the house . They ’re on my “ not to be miss ” list , as they last in container outside far longer than they do as cut bloom in the family . After blooming , the plants can be moved back to the greenhouse area and leave to die back course .
‘ Greenstar ’ ( Tulipa‘Greenstar ’ , Zones 3–7 ) is a phenomenal hybrid that ’s on my must - have listing . A Viridiflora tulip , it has bold green flaming that are more striking than many other selection in this tulip chemical group . After open chartreuse - white with verdant immature fire that are backlit Citrus limon - xanthous , it matures to bright white with green fire and yellow accent . Its tapered petals extend into outstretched arcs like choreographed starbursts atop up to 18 - column inch - tall stems . bloom for a month in a inhuman spring , they incessantly change as I walk by them in the garden .
fervidness fire or Turkish tulip ( Tulipa acuminata , Zones 3–8 ) is a fresh added species to my springiness bulb batting order . A prized rare heirloom see back in polish to at least the early 1800s , it has a wild form with uniquely narrow chicken flower petals that are variably edged and prominently tiptoe with scarlet . Each blossom open up with its pointed petal tips up and touching , as if in prayer . As the flowers age , they open to a superbly unruly conformation on 14- to 16 - column inch - tall stem .

Add bulbs that bloom in summer and fall to your fall shopping list too
When design for spring - blossom bulbs , it ’s also a good time to consider bulbs that bloom during other metre of the twelvemonth . In the summertime when you want to append those greatalliums(Alliumspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–9 ) to the garden , they will not be available in nurseries , so order them in fall . Unusual summer - flowering foxtail lily ( Eremurusspp . and cvs . , Zones 5–8 ) and gloaming - blooming Hedera helix - leave behind Cyclamen purpurascens ( Cyclamenhederifoliumand cvs . , Zones 5–7 ) are also tremendous additions to the garden and are available by chain armor ordination now . And if you have n’t tried them yet , consider tot up ranunculus ( Ranunculusspp . and cvs . , Zones 4–11 ) bulb to your shopping list . Two drool - desirable ones I enjoy including in former leaping and summer in my garden are Tecolote ® ‘Café ’ ( Ranunculus‘Café ’ , zone 8–11 ) , which has gorgeous terra - cotta and favourable bloom , and Elegance ® ‘Bianco Striato ’ ( Ranunculus asiaticus‘Bianco Striato ’ , Zones 8–10 ) , which has striking whitened flowers edge in purple .
