A large part of building a garden on a cliff involves jockeying for sun pic . alas , the far - leave side of the garden , where there is a piece more dirt and few rock , does not get as much sun photograph as the far - right side does . It ’s also a bit steeper on the right side , meaning that any terrace construction has to be fairly heroic .
I am almost finished with a horticulture undertaking that kicked off in the month of August : construct a big new patio in the cheery zone . I used to have a loose rock rampart built here on a shelf of careen that cuts across the cliff typeface . I shoot down down the old rock bulwark and built a big , low bulwark of feeding bottle and concrete that curve out and triples the planting surface area of the terrace . I used about 500 feeding bottle to make the down in the mouth wall . In some place , it ’s fair tall , being about 7 feet at the level best .

After I fill it all with dirt , the ground control surface will be 2 feet above the rock ridgeline . The end of this project is still a mode off because now , I have the huge job of fulfill the area with soil . I have a location picked out on one of the upper ridge where I can dig up grime and sift the rock out to make fill dirt acceptable for the planting terrace . I ’ll add together a bunch of organic material such as manure , compost and old leaf , to it . I ’ve already started filling one end of the seam , but I estimate it will take at least another 400 pail full to fill the seam to the top of the brick edging . The dirt will adjudicate a foot or so during the first year , since I will have added new grease to all the planting sphere after the first class .
With the fall season just around the corner , I regain myself eager to wrap up this late - summertime gardening project . As rewarding as it ’s been , I ’m looking forward to spending more of my meter pampering plants than carrying sod .
