Anyone who grows dahlia knows that September marks the height of the dahlia season . Armloads of dahlia stand for that everyone you live stop up with a bouquet , with few complaints . This year my sheer garden is looking good than it has , but since I ’ve been traveling a lot , few flower have yet to be pick .

When one visualizes the summer garden , especially from the perspective of a snowy , January evening , one suppose such voluptuousness , yet forget that such copiousness can dull the experience a routine . If only one could preserve a few buckets of our coral and peach pom pom dahlias for mid - winter in some witching refrigerator , but such luxury do not exist . We are stuck far too many dahlia and other cut blossom to relish on these last days of summertime , so why not celebrate the H.M.S. Bounty with a later summer organisation . Here is the story of the one I made today : snap below for more .

Time to walk around the garden and see how I might combine a few distinctive flowers which I might commingle to make some placement which would be different then those which that have been embellish our table since early August .   OK , I will let in that we are a bit fortuitous with out floral prosperity –   it ’s just the result of a well stock cutting garden , and the fact that it is a cheerfully cool and bright September following what was a coolheaded , and sunny summer with just enough rainfall .   Only our color extract has just develop flat   but it ’s an acceptable obstruction we can blissfully sweep over with some creativity .

Dahlias are ubiquitous during the cool , brilliant days of September and early October . Their colour and long stems make them the double-dyed cutting blossom – be certain to plan for next yr by ordering some in recent wintertime before the good cut flower variety are sell out . My trick ? purchase order from on - line nurseries which differentiate in dahlia , and do n’t rely on those poly bags found at big box storage . You are more likely than not go to finish up with either colors which are horrid , or industrial plant with flower that are too big . calculate for mixed bag with flowers around 3 - 4 inch in diameter , or involve your supplier for selections which are best for slashed flowers – they will fain tell you which ones have the longest stems and nice prime colors . That ’s what I did . give thanks youSwan Island Dahlias !

Starting with basswood gullible coleus as a makeweight in an antique , Arts and Crafts menses Cu glaze vessel . The darker green of the Dahlia pinnata foliage was just too grim of a green – it did n’t feel as bright as this hydrated lime coleus leaf . orangeness and pinks attend great when combine with chartreuse and Citrus medica tones .

Last January , I decided to grow a few different celosia diverseness – ones which were regard best as thinned flowers . I did n’t want to depend on store - grease one’s palms seedling of celosia as most retail merchant only carry early varieties , or those which have been treated with grow regulators so that the untested plant will be in bloom – hence , marketable condition in the jail cell packs . Still , genus Celosia is not that gentle to develop unless they are under lights and warm . I did end up with a flat or two of seedlings ,   but I then discover that I had no room left in the garden ( stupid me ! ) .

I did n’t require to part with these Celosia ‘ Cramers Lemon - Lime ’ seedlings , so they found their way into some corner of the vegetable garden –   interplanted along side some kale and tomatoes . Now they ’re ready to pluck – tall and fuzzy with their ‘ common cockscomb ’ chief . Their green - olivey vividness is absolutely brilliant .

‘ Maarn ’ is by far my favorite Dahlia color , with squeamish long bow and a beautiful , well-defined orangish creme color unlike any other dahlia . Yummy and harmonious when combined with these shades of olive , pea green and caustic lime green – but it is still a fiddling average and expected .

I could add pink , but most of my pink dahlia are too … … pink . I love , my artistic side sometimes get the best of me , but I am a vividness geek – and as a designer , I can clearly see why this Dahlia pinnata must be put down . Oh , ok , maybe not destroyed – just saved for another arrangement , peradventure one with periwinkle shade in it .

The same goes for this Amaranth ‘ Love Lies Bleeding ’ . Another challenging yearbook to produce from come , I accept that I am felicitous with the manner that my plant look now ( the ejaculate from Baker Creek ultimately pitch a near show , but still not as robust as more intercrossed choice ) .   I am not adding it to this arrangement because it ’s raspberry coloring seems to initiate a company for my eye I do n’t exactly desire .

This green flowering tobacco ( a self seeded Nicotiana   langsdorfii ) is exactly the colour I will accept – another singular shade of green , and texturally it tot up some looseness as well as botanical interest , which is important too . The final effect should look like a garden arrangement and not one from a farm stand or florist .
