Unused front yard space gets transformed into a beautiful and productive spot for growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs

Hi GPODers !

We ’re get an update from a beautiful garden in Walla Walla , Washington that we ’ve go out a dyad of sentence before . Lizzi Gualtieri has share several photos of her sensational backyard that prioritize fabulous foliage and drought - resistant planting , but with plenteousness of floral interest in the mix ( you’re able to check out those submission here : Lizzi ’s Walla Walla GardenandWalla Walla Backyard Two Years by and by ) . However , instead of another look at her fabulous backyard oasis , today we ’re moving to the front of her prop and getting a smashing overview of the project that turned a white and bare infinite into a thoughtfully - craft vegetable garden with plentiful opportunity for bountiful harvests despite a modified step .

Hi ! You mention a minute ago about wanting to see veggie gardens from other regions around the country . Since it ’s almost indoor seed starting time , I wanted to apportion the vegetable garden we created in an unused portion of our front yard here in Walla Walla , Washington . They say we ’re geographical zone 7a but today it ’s more like 6 ! When we move here in 2019 , our destination was to make a raised bed garden zone with way for espaliered apple trees , a fig Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , bird , herbaceous plant garden and compost bank identification number and we require it to look right because it ’s in the front yard . We design and built the blank space ourselves over the grade of a year ( COVID ! we had a spate of metre on our mitt ) The only circumstances we hire out was the leveling and the retaining wall . I think it would be fun to show progress picture rather than just the finished labor .

The lasting raspberry seam has corroborate exchangeable in style to the arbor and also uses the 1/2 ” draw rod as horizontal supports . This shot was taken before we put in all of the gravel .

Here ’s a opinion of the finished corner espalier . The ‘ Celeste ’ variety fig tree(Ficus carica‘Celeste ’ , Zones 6–8)is plant just beyond .

Here ’s another persuasion showing the raised bed and one of the compost bank identification number . The beds are 4 ’ x 8 ’ with a wide top to sit , stand or kneel on . The quad between is enough to get a wheelbarrow through .

The next few images are from this summer showing how the garden has develop . Our apple tree diagram are still too young to start bear , although I ’m go for for Malus pumila next twelvemonth . We planted a ‘ Belle de Boskop’(Malus domestica‘Belle de Boskoop ’ , Zones 4–9)and a ‘ Liberty’(M.‘Liberty ’ , Zones 5–8).The low-down hedge around the outside of tree diagram is germander(Teucriumchamaedrys , Zones 5–9)which is an easy tutelage pollinator attractor ! On the interior we plant saffron bulbs(Crocus sativus , Zones 5–8)that we harvested late fall .

This is looking north from the back of the garden with a culinary salvia in the foreground . There is corn , kale , fava beans and snow peas plant along the business firm with pepper , tomatoes , garlic , cucumber vine , squash , beans and cantaloupe . Arugula freely seminal fluid between the compost bin and we have marigolds to attract good insects .

And last the aspect look south with the pig fencing arch in the foreground . The arches allow for so much more to grow in this comparatively low space . We rise more that we can consume or keep , divvy up with friend and neighbors with the exception of the Allium sativum , you’re able to never have too much ail !

Thank you so much for this incredible garden project with us , Lizzi ! It ’s amazing the possibilities you were able to envision for this space , and even more telling that you were able to make those possibilities a gorgeous reality . I hope this class brings another great harvest , and that we get more exposure from your mythologic gardens .
