The showy bloom of youth are uncommitted in a range of hues , including purple , pinkish , blue , red-faced , white and yellow . The barbate iris diaphragm grows from fleshy Tuber or rhizomes , which keep the plant well supply with nutrients and moisture . The bewhiskered iris does well in pots , and is useable in midget and miniature varieties that are especially suit to container growing .
Step 1
Choose a uncompromising container with a minimum diameter of 12 inches . Be sure the container has at least one drain hole in the bottom . Fill the container with a cosmopolitan purpose commercial pot soil .
Step 2
implant the whiskered iris rhizomes in the container , with the top third of the rootstalk thrusting above the soil . If you be in a hot mood , plant the rootstock slightly deeper , cover it with 1/2 in of grease so it wo n’t burn . The number of bulbs you could found count on the size of the container , but allow about 6 inches between each rootstalk , and 2 column inch between a rootstalk and the border of the container .
Step 3
Water the whiskered iris diaphragm deeply after plant , and continue to water regularly throughout the season until at least a month after the blooms have wilted . Plenty of wet will keep the rootstalk sound for the next growing season .
Step 4
murder the fagged blooms and stems at the end of the growing time of year , but entrust the sword - like leaves in spot . The foliage will cater nutrient to the rhizomes for the next year ’s blooming .
Step 5
Move the container to a protect area during the wintertime , especially during the first wintertime after plant . A layer of mulch such as straw or leaf will also protect the iris , but be certain to remove the mulch as soon as the weather condition warms in spring , as mulch can attract rodent and pests . After the first year , the bearded iris diaphragm will be established and able to survive winter without protection .
Step 6

Rinse the rhizomes so you could see intimately , then cut off any sections that are soft , brown or rotted . Replant part of the rhizomes in the container and set aside some for a new container , or portion out them with friends .
