Some favorite plants and combinations
I ’m Leigh Davenport , a northern Ohio nurseryman with over two X of experience .
This is my best-loved color combination in the garden now , Lemony Lace elderberry(Sambucusracemosa , Zone 3–7 ) andlarkspur . Many of the best garden combinations are serendipitous , but this is one I plan that really works . Back in the shiver of February , I embed QIS Dark Blue larkspur(Consolidaajacis , one-year ) seed from Johnny ’s Selected Seeds . Larkspur actually needs the freezing and dissolve to help it germinate . It ’s one baffling customer . And it self - sow . Lovely !
More larkspur , shuffle with another annual that likes to germinate and grow in cool other spring soil — nigella(Nigelladamascena , yearly ) .

Old - fashionedpeonies(Zones 3–8 ) in bloom .
Monarch butterflieson a huge patch of blue mistflower(Conoclinum coelestinum , Zones 5–9 ) . This North American native repeated blooms from summer into fall with masses of downlike lavender - blue flowers that are beloved by butterflies . Be warned , though — it circularize , so give it room to run .
The dramatic snowy flowers offlowering tobacco(Nicotiana sylvestris , annual ) show up beautifully against a background of morose foliage and flowers . If you let it go to seed , it will often self - sow around the garden .

Waterlily autumn crocus(Colchicum‘Waterlily ’ , Zones 4–7 ) is a bulb that frame up leaves in spring , retreats underground all summer , and then bring about these spectacular bloom in drop .
The rippled petals of a peony poppy(Papaversomniferum , annual ) are almost upstaged by the beautiful silvery leaf . These poppies are another one-year thatgerminatesand produce well in the nerveless part of the year and will happily self - sow in most garden , supply you have n’t put down too thick a stratum of mulch for the seedlings to get a foothold .
