Foraging for Cattails

While many parts of the plant can be useful year bout , the superbly tender shoots are perfect for exhaust in mid to previous bounce . We lead off our search by going to cattail patches that we had realise growing on the side of the route .

Last years cattail are still there , count a little haggard , but we know that there are new shoot forming . you could see them here , they almost look like irises when they are young . Be heedful of that , because fleur-de-lis are toxic , but if you are search where you’re able to see old cattails you should be all right . Cattails need a mess of water , in fact they usually grow on the edges of pool and swamps . Here they were in a ditch on the side of the route where there was a bantam creek . Only a trickle was menstruate now , but I ’m sure there was more water in the wintertime , spend a penny this an ideal spot for foraging .

( Edit : It has been brought to my attention that cattails are a bioaccumulator , which mean that they take up toxic chemicals . So even though you do n’t really need to worry about pesticides because you are only eating the inner portion of the cattail , you still do n’t want to reap them where they may have been spray or along a roadside where they could have taken up nasty clobber . taste to find them in a more natural , less human disturbed area , like the pond I show below ) .

This is what a young cattail looks like . placard how is oval at the base , where an iris is flat at the base . To roll up the shoot , grab the inner part of the plant down low and pull . It should come up fairly easy .

Cattail shoots are one foraging detail that I incline to have at it with . You really do n’t postulate to worry about collecting too much . They are super prolific , not only by seed , but they also spread by rhizomes ( which are edible year round , but are much more hard to take in ) . Plus , it ’s not as if cattail shoots are highly prized or often scrounge in this day and age , although they should be in my opinion !

We also knew of a large pool near town that was full of cattail , so that ’s where we headed to next to see what we could obtain .

These were a small harder to collect as they pretty much were all in the water supply .

That ’s ok , we just had to tilt in a little to hold on them . The high-risk part was the mosquitos , though ! Once you have all the shoots that you desire to collect , it ’s time to convey them home to terminate processing .

How to Use Foraged Cattails

Now you necessitate to separate the outer stalk from the shoot . It ’s reasonably promiscuous as it flake off right off like an onion .

undress off the stratum until you get to the center core . Then skip the white tender part off from the sleep of the straw .

The bottom part is what you want to save for eating . you may even eat them raw , it tastes like cucumber ! The out depart that you strip off and the green top of the shoots can be used for basket weaving and the like . These inside inwardness are the best for feeding , though!Fermented Cattail Shootsare such a dainty !

You will notice when you ’re piece the shoots and peeling off the layer that there is a gelatinlike substance . This is also edible and can be used for thickening soups , as well as being an analgesic and antiseptic medicinal .

The ejaculate pod itself is also utilitarian as it arrest a large amount of fluffy material that can be used as stuffing for toy orpillows .

In a few more weeks the young seed pod of the new plants will form , and they are also edible . I ’ve heard that you could wipe out them like corn on the Larus marinus ! The immature green “ flowers ” can also be used in recipes , like thiscattail flower clams .

Soon thereafter ayellow pollenwill coat the pods that is also edible and rivals the medicinal timber of bee pollen . Just put the head into a brown paper old bag and shake off it to compile the pollen , which can be added to things like breads , pancakes , and evenpasta !

Without a doubtfulness the cattail is one of the most useful works there is . From its comestible shoots and rhizomes , medicinal gel and pollen , leaves for baskets and mats , to fluffy semen for overeat , this really is a wonder plant ! I hope you ’ll conceive differently of it next time you see a patch of them , and maybe you ’ll even adjudicate to pull one up .

Now I had to make up one’s mind what I was going to do with all of my shoot . I tasted a few raw and they were delicious , I cooked a few in butter which was also amazing , but what I really wanted to do was turn them ! After tasting that unassailable cuke flavor I knew they would be great aslacto fermented cattail shoot , so that ’s exactly what I did !
