So when I get a picture submission for Garden Photo of the Day I said , “ Why not ? ” When I read the story the Elise Scanlan in Swampscott , Massachusetts provided with the video , I cognize I could n’t not share :

Not sure if you ’ve ever included , or would consider include , a mail with a video but I think I give it a shot at submit for inclusion in an approaching GPOD Emily Price Post .

I put together this video for my family appendage in 2011 from my garden in Swampscott , MA . At the metre , they were grapple with one of those dread summer drought in the Houston area and I felt they could savour a reminder that all is not dead and buy the farm .

Dad was a passionate gardener and maintained declamatory fruit and veggie gardens throughout our childhood . As a result , we were blessed with a bounty of bracing produce during the growing season . And what we did n’t eat right off , Mom would can so that we could enjoy the rest year - round .

He lamentably guide in 2014 , but I often finger his somebody is with me as I spend time in my own garden and hope he ’s proud of the gardener I ’ve become . I surely have come to apprize how the joyousness of gardening was such a big part of his lifetime .

My effort over the past few years have focus on evergreens , perennials and annual . I lie with experimenting with different colors , shape , size of it and textures . As with most gardeners , my blank continues to evolve as I learn what act and what does n’t around my home . But a few of the planting featured in the TV that have survive and continue to be my favorites are the hydrangeas , grasses , sedums and sweet peas .

I go for you savor them as well !

For those that still desire the distinctive feel of GPOD , Elise did include one photo and I took screenshots from the video to add some plant life ID and more commentary .

First , the photo that Elise shared . In the midst of wintertime , a beautiful bluebigleaf hydrangea(Hydrangea macrophylla , Zones 6–9 ) peak is an instant mood booster dose .

As Elise mentions above , one of the industrial plant she carry on spring up to this day is angelic peas ( Lathyrusodoratus , Zones 6–9 ) . I ’ve been distinguish that if you have success with these treat , delicate flowers that you quickly become addicted . So no surprisal that Elise is growing them over a decennium after !

Another favorite of Elise ’s , sedum come in so many different figure and form that you may never tire of them . Of naturally , the sedum genus has evolved a batch of the years and many plant that were once classified as sedum have now been placed under a different genus . This is the case for two - row   stonecrop ( Phedimus spurius , Zones 3–9 ) depict above .

Elise also include several sensational combinations in her video . Some were larger vignettes and other childlike vista , like this light pink grow glistening with piss droplets . It ’s hard to recount what the low - growing , purple flowers are below , but they compliment the get up dead .

I also loved this pairing of empurpled and livid coneflower . Of of course , both of these plants are technically purpleconeflower(Echinacea purpurea , Zones 3–9 ) , but append in the white multifariousness ( potentially‘White Swan ’ ) gives this planting more dimension .

If you ’re a good morning person , there are few serious room to set forth your sidereal day than with some big morning glorification blooms . This big blossom appear to be the authoritative risque variety ‘ Heavenly Blue ’ ( Ipomoeatricolor‘Heavenly Blue ’ , one-year ) . Made extra exciting with the peep of a hydrangea prime behind .

Lastly , a beautiful shower ofsweet fall clematis(Clematis terniflora , Zones 5–11 ) blush gave Elise ’s Houston relatives a small taste of fall in New England .

give thanks you so much for portion out your special garden remembering with us , Elise ! While garden photos ( and picture ) are a groovy memento of past blossom , they can also constitute so much more and help us get in touch to memories from in and outside of the garden .
