Quiet beauty in the cold months of the year
Today we ’re visiting Nancy Sarpola ’s garden in its winter dress .
Hi GPOD folks , I have sent you several passel of photograph of our quarter - acre Oregon hillside garden over the years.(Check out those posts here.)This batch was guide the end of December . The light is mute , and so are the colors this time of year , but there is still some quiet beauty .
This photograph showswinter jasmine(Jasminum nudiflorum , zone 6–11 ) in bloom with variegatedDaphneodora‘Maejima ’ ( Zones 7–9 ) in front of it . Winter jasmine blooms off and on all wintertime here except when it get really cold .

Here we see a path with grassy , evergreenCarex . Near the top of the exposure , Mahonia‘Charity ’ ( Zones 7–9 ) blossom in yellow .
front up the stone step . There are dried grasses to the right and aPierisjaponica(Zones 5–9 ) with blushful buds that will flower in March .
Looking toward the birdhouse in the cherry tree tree in late December . On the hillside are dry hydrangea blooms and the blue - gray foliage of melianthus(Melianthusmajor , Zones 7–12 ) , which is often killed to the terra firma in wintertime but has survived so far this twelvemonth . Behind that is a bright , variegatedEuonymus .

This picture showsBergeniacordifolia(Zones 3–8 ) with its leave turning glossy red ink in winter and beak up the color of the rosyPieris japonicabuds behind them .
The sun came out for a couple of hours , and I get a photo of theClematiscirrhosa‘Freckles ’ ( Zones 7–9 ) in bloom overhead on the bower .
The last picture show the stems of a young shrubby dogwood(Cornussanguinea‘Midwinter Fire ’ , Zones 4–7 ) backed by an evergreenOsmanthus .
