Yesterday , after several abortive attack , I at long last managed to drag Him Indoors toDerry Watkins ’ Special Plants Nurseryat Cold Ashton , near my home town of Bath . Although Derry ’s nursery is insert half way down a exorbitant hill below the village it ’s evident that the resolution was   aptly named . The view out towards the Severn Estuary and Wales is beautiful , but it ’s a chilly blot .   At the final stage of   Greenways Lane – one of those byways   that has a strip of grass   in the in-between and gold dandelions at   the border – we arrive to find we were the only customer . The nursery squad   had found a warm , sheltered spot for   an alfresco tiffin . I feel slightly guilty intrude on their interruption but , as I hop , there were many wonderful plant to perturb us .

Derry Watkins has a report for chase after down rare and interesting perennials and grasses , many of which have been try and try out in her own exposed garden . Like me , she also has a taste for attendant perennials , pointing out that they often flower for much foresightful than their stalwart vis-a-vis . I particularly want to get my hands on   the white form ofGeranium maderense , which Derry refers to as ‘ Alba ’ . I have a individual plant of ‘ Guernsey White ’ , yet to flower , that I raised from come , but want more . Having pocket two Albas ,   we go on to explore   the repose of the nursery . ThreeDigitalis canariensis , twoZaluzianskya ovata , anImpatiens omeianaand anImpatiens kilimanjarixpseudoviola‘Pale Pink ’ later , my wallet was naked . ( The latter I trust to propagate and arise in the light shade of the passage that direct to our front door . )

Special Plants Nursery had already   be up to anticipation ,   but then , as I purge a discerning   centre over one last bench , I spottedChorizema ilicifoliumcommonly know as the holly flame pea . I was taken with , but alas only the display plant stay . gratefully this lanky westerly Australian native with its holly - like leaves and neon blooms is easily produce from seed , bloom when only a few inches high and continuing on to about 3 ft at maturity . The plant want the shelter of a coolheaded nursery or conservatory but reward with copious flowers from March until October .
