In 2023 we planted our landrace - in - procession pickle Cucumis sativus seeds along with some refreshful store - buy seeds , immix them all together so they would cross and give us a broad inherited pool .
Some upshot :
We had stilt of cucumber , at long last harvest 163lbs of them before allow the rest go to seed so we could save tons for the next yr .

or else of growing them on trellises like Normal Human Gardeners(TM ) , we used them as a solid ground cover in the Grocery Row Gardens .
I ca n’t tell you how much I love Grocery dustup horticulture . It ’s the perfect combination of yearly , perennial , high intellectual nourishment output , lawlessness and parliamentary procedure .
I get all wacky about it .

I feel with my heart that Grocery course Gardening is my genuine love .
But we were talking about cucumber vine , were n’t we ?
Here are the first cuke , come up :

mark the chicken bones in the rough compost we establish them in . Yes , you may compost meat , and it ’s majuscule for the garden . We ’ve been composting many , many piles of crybaby bones and rubbish from a local source . The garden have bones all over them now . The’ll wear out down over clip and flow the ground , as God designed it .
Most of the chicken has been go into the compost , but some of it has been char for our terra preta experiment .
Either manner , it goes in the garden and feeds our works .

We ’ve planted about twenty hills of cucumber vine and another twenty Hill of Citrullus vulgaris around the Grocery Row Gardens so far . Our three - part ground cover stratum last year grew in succession .
First , the cucumber run around and produced us a harvest .
They were then follow by watermelons , which overtook the cucumbers as they died out and became the dominant ground cover .

As they finished up and former summertime pose in , sweet potatoes pack over as the main terra firma screening .
The three ground binding chip in us the following yields :
Cucumbers : 163 lbs

Watermelons : 760 lbs
Sweet Irish potato : 232 pound
That is 1,155lbs of solid food from just the basis masking bed .

And it all took very little try , as they were reasonably much planted and then cut . If you have enough compost and/or manure in the soil and they get a petty water to start running , you ’ll usually get something . At least when they ’re institute in Grocery Rows . I ’ve had worse luck growing these crops conventionally .
The landrace genetics on the cucumbers and melon aid as well . They seem more vigorous than the non - interracial varieties we ’ve grown in the past times .
We ’ve already planted watermelon and sweet potatoes along with our cucumbers . We ’ll see if we get exchangeable results to last year . I have a nifty feeling about it .

Learn more about Grocery Row Gardeningin my little book .
I believe you ’ll enjoy how well it works – like this gent !
