Tiny treasures in a suburban garden

Brian Coleman , a ego - described Iowa boy stuck in suburban New Jersey , grows a wonderful regalia of strange and beautiful plant life in his garden , many in them inhypertufa containersthat he makes himself .

Pulsatillaambigua(Zones 4–8 ) is pink , succinct , and a very welcomeearly flub . Pulsatilla is a big genus , with many marvellous speciesnativeto North America , Europe , and Asia .

At the other end of the horticulture twelvemonth isAlliumthunbergii‘Album ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) , one of the last perennials to blossom in Brian ’s garden . Most of the popularAlliumspecies acquire in the garden are leap orsummer bloomers , but this one waiting to the very end of the gardening season to put on a show .

Brian makes bog planters for special plant that love those conditions . Here , in the fall , the parting of pitcher plant life ( Sarracenia , Zones 5–9 ) are fading , but the spires of madam tress orchidaceous plant ( Spiranthescernua , Zones 5–9 ) are in full bloom .

Fresh yellow pitcher plants ( Sarraceniaflava , Zones 5–9 ) grow alongside the incredible prime of pinkish calopogon orchid ( Zones 3–9 ) . Despite their alien feel , these pitcher plants andorchidsare native to North America and require boggy conditions to flourish .

Brian ’s many hypertufa containers are thoroughgoing spots to show off special , lilliputian plants like thisSaponaria pumilio(Zones 5–8 ) .

Brian has a hypertufa collection on the drive . These handmade planters make bully homes for alpine plants and just get more beautiful as they maturate and acquire a patina ofmoss .

This incredibleHaberlearhodopensis(Zones 5–8 ) in full flush has been in this planter for seven year , flower more each year . This unusual flora is actually ahardy perennialrelative of the familiarhouseplanttheAfrican violet .

The adorable blooms ofPulsatillapratensissubsp . Bohemica(Zones 4–8 ) are of the darkest possiblepurple .
