Want some true blue air for your garden ? Borage ( Borago officinalis ) is an old - fashioned annual herb that many gardeners uprise for its edible young leaf and flowers , which savour faintly of cucumber . Its blurred grain and hazy blue colouring are even more compelling , though . It forms a large mound of leaf in a season ( up to 2 - 3 invertebrate foot tall and all-embracing ) , and reseeds profusely but not annoyingly . It prefer full sun to partial shade and well - drain soil . The starry flower can be floated in drinks , add to salads , or frozen into water ice cubes for fancy drink or punch .
