Transforming a neglected space

Today we ’re visit Ellenita Mattera ’s garden on Long Island , New York .

Ellenita purchased her property five years ago and has totally transform the space .

This is the “ before ” image . The space had clearly been completely neglected by the previous owner .

The “ after ” shot is pretty amazing ! Ellenita added the pack of cards to cover an old , low concrete patio , and luxuriant planting all around have really transformed the space .

View from the pack of cards , look out into the garden . white-livered foliage is a repeated theme in the garden , helping to pull it together . On the pack of cards , orange is a theme , from the orange chair , an orange zinnia ( Zinnia×marylandica , yearly ) , and an orange lantana ( Lantanacamara , Zones 8–11 or as annual ) pruned up as a measure .

A beautiful monarch butterfly adjudicate to come by and add yet another orange component to the pack of cards ! Lantana bloom are a pet of many butterflies . Just be certain they have n’t been treat with an insecticide when you purchase them to ensure they are a safe landing place zone for butterflies .

A Southernmagnolia(Magnoliagrandiflora , Zones 6–10 ) . Native to the southeastern United States , this evergreen plant magnolia is a preferred garden plant the human race over for its huge , fragrant flush and sheeny , evergreen foliage .

A yellowed - leavedsweet white potato vine vine(Ipomoeabatatas , yearly or tender electric light ) run out out of a container on the deck .

A dark - leaved Japanese maple ( Acerpalmatum , Zones 5–9 ) flanked by a yellow threadleaf cypress on one side and a Funka on the other , with colorful coleus in the front , creating a diversity of color andtexturejust from foliage with a note of garden pink from geraniums ( Pelargoniumhybrid , annual ) .
