Before , this rooftop terrace in the Chelsea locality of Manhattan was an unusable blank with rotting Grant Wood decking . The terrace is situated adjacent to the master chamber of the owner ’s apartment and serves as an extension phone of the midland life space . " One of the prompt goals we had for the space was to make it feel more private . Large office across the street look instantly onto this terrace . This patio makeover was completed as part of a major renovation to the flat interior . A key component of the task was to supercede the existing rot wood deck panels with fervor - repellent aluminium decking , in submission with local fire code . “ All component of the deck are constructed to marry into the framing so they are not penetrating any part of the building . This is a specific matter we do in rooftop gardens . To keep the decking from looking too modern , we chose a pulverisation - coat brown finish that evokes a look of wood but without the maintenance , ” says Erb .
Site access presented a major challenge , since the main entrance to the terrace was through a very narrow-minded stairway on the interior of the apartment . “ Every component had to be measured cautiously before bringing it to the jobsite . Even the pieces of decking had to be cut to specific lengths before they were bestow to the place , ” says Erb .
It was also hard to transmit to the other contractors on the site that plants can be damage by construction debris .
