18 - Day Compost ? Possible ?
Quite possibly . I watched Geoff Lawton’sPermaculture Soilsagain the other night with Rachel .
In it , Geoff make a few sinful claim about his compost .
He says it ’s possible to make compost in 18 days , and if Geoff says it is … well … it is .
18-Day Compost
That say , 18 - twenty-four hour period compost is n’t a raw idea ; it ’s whatthe Berkeley Method does , though you need a shredder of some sort ( lawn lawn mower , anyone ? ) to move the process along :

Just recall that 1 cubic m is 1,000 litres , and if you think how much you pay for a 30 l bag of potting mixture ( over $ 10 ) here in Australia , you realise what value this entail .
Compost is worthful , and if you make more in a faster period of sentence it helps you get beds travel . Right now we ’re entering the showery season and I need a lot of compost fast . Our bed are being dug and plant and having it uncommitted to feed the rise crop would be quite helpful .
The Experiment
I decide to try 18 - twenty-four hour period compost using what we have available on our homestead .
The first thing I needed to do was build another binful , as I already have a batch of compost go . It should be done in a few weeks , but I wanted to start NOW !

regrettably , I did n’t have enough textile to get a solid start on this pile . I need to go cut off some supergrass and amass some manure before I can make a good go of it . I ’m not sure mango leaves are going to fall apart down nimble enough , though they do seem to molder a mess quicker than chocolate leave . They are the main “ browns ” I have , so they ’ll just have to do . Even if turning on a regular basis means I ’ll get compost in a month instead of a few month , it ’ll be heavy . I have made compost pretty promptly in the past tense by get more air into the pile and rotate non - composted materials into the center , so we shall see . perchance we ’ll make 21 - day compost . Or 19 - day compost !
stay on tuned – I ’ll be hunt biomass and will start this experiment shortly .
